For most of us life is full of challenges, difficulties and hardships. We encounter discomfort when we want comfort. We yearn for peace only to experience chaos. We hope for happiness in the lives of those around us only to watch them drown in hopelessness and depression. In I John, John writes to a church that is struggling with the painful problems of life on planet earth. John draws a sweeping panorama of what normal Christian life should be when life in the church gets complicated. As we study I John together we’ll find guidelines that help us assess the quality of our lives together as we attempt to live out the type of Christian community that John prescribes. We will consider constructing ways of handling conflict and how to lovingly confront aberrant teaching. John also equips us to accurately discern between true and false faith and shows us the type of fruit that should accompany true faith. Throughout the book of I John we’ll observe the recurring pattern of love. Love must be the context in which we teach and proclaim the truth of the gospel. Love must be the throttle in our application of justice in the context of a Biblical faith community. Let’s pray and ask God to help us be a more committed, intimate, and holy faith community as we study this letter from a Godly disciple of Christ. Pastor Kyle The Apostle John
