Sunday Elementary Education Schedule

During our first service, which begins at 9:30 a.m., we offer Children's Church for Pre-K through 4th grade.  During our second service, which begins at 11:00 a.m., we offer Children's Sunday School for Pre-K through 6th grades.  Please note that we offer other classes during the first and second services, but these classes are not designed for Pre-K through 6th grade students, and as such are not discussed on this Elementary Education part of OBC's website.  

Children’s Church Schedule

We offer 3 Children's Church classes during the first service: A Pre-K/K class (generally children begin the Pre-K/K class when they turn four), a 1st-2nd grade class, and a 3rd-4th grade class.  From 9:30 until 9:40, the 1st-2nd grade and 3rd-4th grade classes meet in their classrooms, which are located downstairs.  At 9:40 the two classes proceed to the Gathering Place, the large open space area downstairs.  There the children are led in birthday celebrations, announcements, worship songs, and a Bible lesson and activities.  At 10:10 the children return to their classrooms for Bible lessons and activities.  From 9:30 until 10:15, the Pre-K/K class meets in their classroom upstairs and at 10:10 proceeds downstairs to the Gathering Place.  From 10:10 to 10:35, this class has birthday celebrations, announcements, worship songs and a Bible lesson.  At 10:35 the children return upstairs to their classroom.  The materials used for the classroom time for Children's Church classes are titled Faithweaver, from Group Publishing. 

Classroom Oversight Between Services

Parents have the option to leave their children in their classrooms in between services.  Because of the number of parents who serve during both services and in between services, we believe it is important to provide parents with the option to have their children remain in the children’s classrooms.  Children’s Church workers remain in their classrooms until Sunday School workers arrive.  

Children's Sunday School Schedule

During the 11:00 service, we offer four classes for younger children (classes for older children through adult are also offered): Pre-K/K, 1st-2nd, 3rd-4th, and 5th-6th.  The children remain in their classrooms during this time.  Children's Sunday School classes from Pre-K/K through 6th grade use Scripture Press Total Bible Learning.

Promotion of Children

We promote children to the next grade level the first Sunday in June.  Thus, if your child is beginning the 3rd grade in the fall, he or she would be promoted from the 1st-2nd grade class to the 3rd-4th grade class.

Children's Ministry Teaching Schedules and Volunteer Opportunities

Our Children's Church teachers teach for one month and then have the next two months off.  For example, if you teach in January, you would also teach in April, July, and October and have the other months off.  Children's Sunday School teachers teach from September through May and have June through August off.  Summer Children's Sunday School teachers teach from June through August.  In addition to teaching, helpers assist with Children's Church and Children's Sunday School classes.  If you have any questions about OBC's Elementary Education or would like to discuss volunteering in this area, please contact Dave Ross, the Deacon of Children's Ministries, at 703-915-3549 or dross@llgm.com.
